The Problem
Busy working people do not have time to went the bakery to place an order for a cake if they want special customizable cakes for their celebrations. Hate to stand in long lines when the bakery is housefull for dine-in.
The Goal
Design an app for Smile’s Island bakery that let their customers place customizable cake order easily and also let them book their table in advance through the app.
Responsibility
Conducting interviews, paper and digital wireframing, low and high-fidelity prototyping, conducting usability studies, accounting for accessibility, and iterating on designs
My Role
Morale (Muskan Soni)
I led the Product Design - User Experience (UX) and User Interface (UI) - of this project. I also receive constructive feedback from two fellow designers in order toto improve and get other perspectives about what I was designing.

Process Followed
Research
I conducted interviews and created empathy maps to understand the users I’m designing for and their needs. A primary user group identified through research was working adults who
don’t have time to went the bakery for placing orders. This user group confirmed initial assumptions about Smile’s Island bakery customers, but research also revealed that they are always excited about celebration and wants to make them special and memorable through special element for their family and friends. Other user likes to reserve their table in advance for dine-in because they hate to stand in long lines and wait for their turn, as bakery remains most of time houseful.

Paper Wireframes
Taking the time to draft iterations of each screen of the app on paper ensured that the elements that made it to digital wireframes would be well-suited to address user pain points. For the home screen, I prioritized a quick and easy ordering process to help users save time.

Digital Wireframes
As the initial design phase continued, I made sure to base screen designs on feedback and findings from the user research.
Low - Fidelity Prototype

I then translated my chosen sketch into my first set of low fidelity digital wireframes and conducted my first round of usability testing to test the flow of the app and catch any issues early on.
Usability Study
I conducted two rounds of usability studies. Findings from the first study helped guide the designs from wireframes to mockups. The second study used a high-fidelity prototype and revealed what aspects of the mockups needed refining.

takeaways
While designing the Smile’s Island bakery app, I learned valuable lessons in designing app and most importantly how to empathize with users. Because empathy is the key term in UX world. I learned that the first ideas for the app are only the beginning of the process. Usability studies and peer feedback influenced each iteration of the app design. Understanding the constraints and opportunities in app designing helped me frame my design decisions and strategy.
